The Matthew Project Summer BBQ

On 26 April, the service user Aftercare Group travelled to Thetford to pitch their ideas for hosting Summer Barbeques in a "Dragon's Den'' style format. A panel of local business people were impressed with the group's presentation and awarded them £400 for summer barbeque events.

The date for the first barbeque was set for 13 June and the service user group took on the responsibility of organising the event. A local band called The Jonny Jump Band gave their services free of charge at the request of one group member. Two other members of the group went to Under 1 Roof and successfully completed food hygiene certificates, enabling them to prepare the food on the day.

On the morning of the BBQ, staff helped blow up balloons as well as decorate the garden in the Quakers Building where the BBQ was being held. We were lent an enormous BBQ which cooked the burgers and sausages beautifully, so thank you to the owner of this BBQ.

Two of the group bought the food with everything being prepared in the Matthew Project kitchen. There was a great feeling of camaraderie with both service users and staff pitching in to help. The BBQ began at 1pm and we were delighted that the sun came out for a while. A good crowd amassed and the atmosphere was great. The band played songs that people could join in with, and one of our clients performed Everybody Hurts by REM with the crowd behind him all the way.

The Matthew Project would just like to say thank you to everyone involved in this special day and roll on the next BBQ in September. Any money raised will go towards the next BBQ.
