05 October 2007

Based in Cromer,The Junction will help people over 18 who abuse drugs and alcohol and also their families and friends. The official launch took place on 24 September.

Taking several years to develop, and based on research undertaken by the University of East Anglia, the views of North Norfolk residents who are affected by substance misuse and agencies who work in the area.

The Junction will offer a wide range of services including advice, information, support, one to one sessions and groups through different agencies working from the venue.

The Junction is managed by The Matthew Project, a well known and respected Norfolk charity that offers support andadvice to both young people and adults across Norfolk. One of their Patron's ex NCFC player, Craig Fleming, recently walked across North Norfolk to raise money for the charity.

Andy Wicks,Matthew Project Junction Coordinator said ' Having worked in North Norfolk for a number of years and seen the need and how hard it is for people to access services, I am really excited that support is now available locally. Together with other agencies we can work to make a difference in the community and to people's lives'.

Daniel Harry from Norfolk Drug and Alcohol Action Team comments, ''The Norfolk Drug and Alcohol Action Team and the North Norfolk Safer Communities Partnership have jointly funded this service in Cromer to meet the complex needs of substance misusers. TheJunction enables a range of agencies to work together in a common venue to provide a package of services. The Junction will help to increasesubstance misusers engagement with treatment in North Norfolk and so reduce the harms associated with drug and alcohol misuse in the area.''

Julian Bryant, Director of The Matthew Project comments,' Over some time we have been trying to help people in North Norfolk who have been desperate for help. Their lives and the experience of their families have been so hard due to drugs, alcohol and other factors. This includes adults, children, families, friends and members of the community. People in North Norfolk have often had to travel long distances to get the help they need and then have to go from service to service. By bringing services together in thisvenue we want to make it so that the individual or family who needs help can go to The Junction and get much of the help they need in one place andcloser to home. We are very excited that this vision which has been held by different agencies and people in North Norfolk has been realised. It will make a real difference and improve the life of the community'.

The Junction is located in Cromer town centre, with an open drop in facility each week day between 2pm-4pm. Support available includes
  • information,
  • advice
  • 1-1 support sessions
  • carers advice
  • referrals, debt and benefit advice
  • housing advice
  • access to computers and the internet

Workers will also visit clients in their own homes and communities to ensure all those needing support are reached. Workers from different agencies can be seen atthe office at different times.

The Junction is being run on behalf of the partnership by The Matthew Project, a key agency involved in the initial development of the project.
