Next Steps: Recovery That Builds Community

Next Steps is Norfolk’s first and only post-treatment recovery service for adults affected by substance misuse. Based at our award-winning Recovery Centre in Norwich, it offers a community-based, peer-led approach to long-term recovery.

 

With over 50% of our team having lived experience of recovery, we understand the journey—and we walk it with you.

What We Offer:

Next Steps is made up of three integrated strands of support:

Next Steps, located in central Norwich, is Norfolk's first community recovery hub, providing a range of support for adults in recovery from addiction, including:

Update: Our award-winning Recovery Centre on Oak Street is now also open Saturdays and Sundays, so 7 days a week.  Ideal if you, or someone you know, might benefit from structured recovery support from drug or alcohol use or simply from building community with likeminded people and can’t access services Monday to Friday, or find the weekends particularly challenging.

Substance Misuse Recovery

Our core programme supports adults in recovery from drug and alcohol misuse through a wide range of interventions:

  • Recovery Support Programme (RSP)
    A 6-week structured programme combining:

    • SMART Recovery

    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

    • Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

    • Psychosocial skills development

  • 1:1 Support

  • Personalised sessions using motivational interviewing to address trauma, housing, finances, and relationships.

  • Therapeutic Groups

       Peer-led sessions to build resilience, self-awareness, and recovery tools.

  • Open Access

       Drop-in support 7 days a week for connection, advice, and community.

  • Skills & Employability

       Training in barista work, creative arts, volunteering, and life skills.

  • Community Integration

       A strong focus on equality, co-production, and peer support.​

 

Outcomes:

Improved mental health, reduced substance use, and stronger social connections.

Criminal Justice Recovery

We support individuals at every stage of the criminal justice system—from custody to community reintegration.

  • In-Prison Support
    Including HMP Norwich, Wayland, and Bure.

  • Inside Out Programme
    A 10-week peer-led SMART Recovery course delivered in prison.

  • Continuity of Care
    Seamless support from prison to community.

  • 1:1 and Group Recovery Planning
    Intensive, trauma-informed support tailored to each individual.

  • Partnership Working
    Collaborating with Probation, Phoenix Futures, CGL, and others.

 

Outcomes:
Reduced reoffending, improved mental health, and sustained recovery.

Next Steps for Veterans

Building on the legacy of Outside the Wire, this strand offers specialist support for veterans impacted by substance misuse and poor mental health.

  • Veteran-Led Support
    Delivered by staff and peer befrienders with lived military and recovery experience.

  • 1:1 Outreach
    Home-based and community support across Norfolk.

  • Veteran Peer Groups
    In Norwich, Sheringham, Thurston, and expanding.

  • SMART Recovery & Holistic Planning
    Structured recovery with a focus on identity, purpose, and wellbeing.

  • Befriending Scheme
    Long-term peer support from trained veterans.

 

Outcomes:
Improved wellbeing, reduced substance use, and a renewed sense of belonging.
