Listen to this story as an audio file:

‘I love attending the groups in Norwich. It's helped me become more confident and positive, and I feel comfortable around new people now.’

Before Harley found The Matthew Project, life had not been easy.

Living with ASD, physical health challenges, and the heartbreaking loss of his mum to cancer, Harley often struggled to find his place in the world. Everyday life could feel overwhelming, and opportunities that many young people take for granted sometimes felt out of reach. As Harley is home schooled, it was particularly important for him to build friendships, meet new people, and develop confidence in social situations.

A year ago, Harley began working with The Matthew Project through the On Track programme, starting with one-to-one coaching. From the very beginning, his Young People’s Practitioner took time to understand Harley as an individual, recognising both the challenges he faced and the strengths he already had.

With personalised support, encouragement, and structure, things slowly began to change.

Over time, Harley started attending SafeSPACE social activities in Norwich, where he engaged in a wide range of positive sessions and workshops. The activities gave him the chance to try things he may never otherwise have experienced, while also helping him connect with other young people in a safe and supportive environment.

Week by week, Harley’s confidence began to grow.

He became a valued member of the group, forming strong friendships and discovering new interests through activities such as sewing, art, and baking. What once felt daunting, meeting new people and socialising, gradually became something he could enjoy.

Reflecting on his journey, Harley shared:

“I love attending the groups in Norwich, I've learned so much and made lots of friends. It's helped me become more confident and positive, and I feel comfortable around new people now. I've enjoyed sewing, art, and baking and the activities are fun and good for my mental health.”

The impact on Harley’s life has been clear to those around him too.

His dad describes watching his son flourish through the support of The Matthew Project and the opportunities available through SafeSPACE. With guidance, encouragement, and a sense of belonging, Harley has grown socially, practically, and emotionally.

Harley’s dad said:

“My son has flourished thanks to The Matthew Project and the activities he's been able to attend. With support and guidance, I've seen his confidence grow, his social skills flourish, and a huge positive impact on his life.”

Today, Harley continues to grow in confidence and independence, supported by friendships, new experiences, and a community where he feels accepted and valued.
