Volunteer for us
Use your skills to become a Matthew Project superhero!
Creative/Therapeutic Writing Facilitator (Next Steps) Volunteer

Are you passionate about creative writing in all its forms?
This is an amazing opportunity to share your love for the written or spoken word!

The Matthew Project is a welcoming and vibrant place for building community, providing support, and helping to develop the confidence and skills for those in recovery from substance misuse. The Recovery Hub (at 70-80 Oak Street, Norwich NR3 3AQ) has a Studio room and IT facilities and is currently open Monday to Friday. However, soon, the plan is to open at weekends too.

We are looking for volunteers to support the Next Steps Recovery Team in delivering/facilitating creative writing sessions in a fun, relaxing and supportive group environment. We would like to introduce all forms of creative writing, including, for example, storytelling, journalism, poetry, scripts, lyrics.

We recognise that developing new skills helps to increase someone’s confidence, makes a positive contribution to their ongoing recovery, and can increase their employability. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers who can encourage people to join in and make them feel comfortable by providing a supportive learning environment.

Tasks may include:
-
delivering creative activities to small groups;
-
adapting activities, where appropriate, to include those who have difficulty writing, for example, using voice recording, scribing, and storytelling without the written word, etc.;
-
helping to develop an exhibition of work;
-
ensuring that health and safety requirements are maintained; and
-
signposting service users to other activities, further training, or employment opportunities.
-

Out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Personal qualities are very important to volunteering roles. You will need to be reliable, friendly, enthusiastic, and have a positive attitude to life. We also value good listening and great communication skills. These all need to be coupled with a commitment to substance misuse recovery principles.

The application process will include an interview, referencing and, if appropriate to the volunteering role, checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service.
